Destin Florida
Located on the emerald coast, in the northwest corner of Florida's Panhandle, the city of Destin is popularly known as the "World's Luckiest Fishing Village."
History of Destin, Florida
Native Americans are though to have settled the area as early as 600 A.D. Spanish explorers began to survey the area in the early 1500s, and Spanish surveyor Don Francisco Tapia drew the first known map of the area in 1693. The Destin community was named for a fisherman, Captain Leonard Destin, who moved to northwest Florida from New London, Connecticut in the mid 1800s. Captain Destin began the prosperous fishing industry that gave Destin its nickname.
The small fishing village was unreachable except by boat until 1930, when a bridge was constructed over the Destin Pass. With the making of the bridge, vacationers discovered the fine white sands and emerald Gulf waters of the Destin coastline, and the area became one of Florida's most desirable destinations.
Destin Economy
The best and biggest fishing fleet in Florida still docks at the Destin Harbor. In addition to world-famous fishing and watersport opportunities--including diving, snorkeling, and the Gulf's fastest deepwater access-- the Destin area offers golf, tennis, and other tourist and recreational opportunities.
Destin Area Climate
Destin's climate is sub-tropical, and the weather is stable and mild. The average daily temperature is 67.2 degrees F.
