Hilton Head SC
Hilton Head is both a town and an island. Located in southern South Carolina, just south of Port Royal Sound on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, it is the largest of the Atlantic sea islands between New Jersey and Florida. At its widest point, Hilton Head Island is approximately 12 miles (19 km) long and 5 miles (8 km) wide.
History of Hilton Head SC
Hilton Head is named for a British sea explorer, Captain William Hilton, who first sighted the island in 1663. In 1717, English planters settled the island, growing crops of indigo and rice. Following the American Revolution, cotton became the island's major export, and the African-American slaves brought to the island's cotton plantations formed the culture and regional creole language known as Gullah. During the Civil War, the island was occupied by Union forces in 1861.
Economy of Hilton Head SC
