Saint Marys Georgia

St. Marys, Georgia is a small coastal town located on the Atlantic in southeast Georgia. It is a quaint town, steeped in regional Georgia history, overlooking an especially beautiful section of Georgia Atlantic coastline.

Established by the British in 1787, the town is filled with numerous historic landmarks, including the second oldest church in Georgia, built in 1808. It has a very special atmosphere, its streets lined by tall trees, antique shops, seafood eateries, charming homes, and elegant old architecture. The St. Marys climate is temperate, and you will usually feel a soft breeze blowing in from the Atlantic.

The town of St. Marys, Georgia is often referred to as the "gateway to Cumberland Island." A regular ferry takes visitors on the 45-minute ride from St. Marys to the Cumberland Island National Seashore. This nature preserve is a beautiful island where wild horses run freely and visitors can enjoy 17 miles of pristine sand beaches. Several inns provide room for visitors.

The Orange Hall Welcome Center is noted for its Greek revival architecture. The St. Marys Submarine Museum is also a nationally noted tourist attraction. The museum has a comprehensive display of both regional and national submarine history and memoriabilia. It is itself located in one of St. Marys many historical buildings, built in 1911.
