Waterfront Communities

For millions of landlocked Americans every year, the number one vacation destination is... water. Many of us remember, time and again, the regular routine of packing everyone and everything that fits into the family vehicle. After endless hours of driving, the goal is reached, and then what fun it's time to splash in the streams, bodysurf at the beach, or take a family raft down the winding river...

And then there are those few, lucky ones who actually live on the waterfront. An increasing number of waterfront communities have been built in recent years to fulfill their growing demand. These waterfront communities are as varied as the waterways they overlook and the lifestyls of the residents they are designed for.

Private Waterfront Communities
Many waterfront communities reject the subdivisions of average surburbia and seek to create a true community atmosphere. Also known as master planned, planned, or private communities, these waterfront communities are independent islands--complete with landscaped grounds, recreational facilities, and community gathering places. Some, known as traditional neighborhood developments, are designed according to the principles of New Urbanism. These traditional waterfront communities set aside a certain percentage of the land for public green spaces, and are centered around community town centers, where residents can enjoy fine dining, shopping, and events. Private waterfront communities, though sometimes located on remote waterway or coastline, provide the best in modern amenities.

Gated Waterfront Communities
Gated waterfront communities take the relative privacy and quiet of planned community living to the next level. Accessible only by secure, gated entrances, these waterfront communities provide residents with an added feeling of security and exclusivity.

Environmentally-Aware Waterfront Communities
For years, scientists have warned that waterfront ecosystems are particularly fragile and important for the rest environmental health of the surrounding region. Keeping this in mind, some waterfront communities promote themselves as "eco-friendly" communities. Some have preserved certain sections of their land for nature preserves. Others have implemented environmentally-aware systems into the community infrastructure.
